Welcome Back!

Hello Parents/Guardians,

Welcome back to a new term filled with great learning opportunities for all.  As we move through this term, I will be focused on getting all students prepared for the challenges of grade 2.  In addition, I would like for students to become more independent with their reading, writing, problem solving and critical thinking.  Try and allow your children to work on their homework as independently as possible.
News Flash! – Grade one won a day sail trip courtesy of Sunsail and the BVI Tourist Board for their Paper Making Project. We were one out of two classes in the territory that won the trip.  We can go anywhere in the BVI and will plan to do so sometime in June.  Information will be forthcoming.
Also, grade one will visit the local library again during the week of May 21, 2012.  I will e-mail you to let you know the exact date and time.  If you have any questions, please let me know.
One again, thank you for your support and cooperation.

Animals on the Farm Research Project

Thank you to all who were able to attend and contribute to the grade 1 Publishing Party!  It was a huge success.  Students read their writing pieces and did such a wonderful job!
The link below is to a copy of the class book (research project) about animals on the farm that I e-mailed to you.  We are excited about being able to get additional copies of our class book so that all students can get a copy.  Before we do that, we want to finalize the book first.  If anyone is aware of how we can get additional copies at a reduced rate please let me know.

Writing/Grammar –  This week in writing, students will begin to write the beginning, middle and end of their stories.  In grammar, students will be learning about the verbs is/are and we/were.  They will use them in sentences with both singular and plural subjects/nouns.  Practice at home with your children both writing and saying sentences with these verbs.  Be sure that your children use the correct verbs according to the subject/noun in the sentence.  Homework –  selected pages from English workbook on topic. Field Trip – We will not be taking another field trip to the library on March 27, 2012.  Instead, we will take this trip after the Spring Break so that students can enjoy their reading books.  More information will be provided on this trip.  I will need volunteers for this trip.

Community Worker – We have been discussing community workers in the classroom and their job functions.  I am asking a parent to volunteer to come into the classroom to get interviewed by first graders next week!  If anyone is a doctor, dentist, postal worker, police officer, firefighter, etc. or if you know someone who is, please let me know so that we can arrange a date and time for you to come in.

Snacks and Lunch:  Kudos to those parents who continue to send their children with healthy fruit and vegetable filled snacks and lunches.  Please note that fruit snacks, chocolate pudding, etc. are not substitutes for fruits and vegetables.  Please remember to send fruit and vegetables every day.  Some parents are sending too much cookies and potato chips in their child’s lunch kits.  Continue reading
